Interweaving Narratives
is a collaborative intervention by the artists Deirdre O‘Leary (CH), Samuel Tschudin (CH), Yota Tsotra (CH/GR) and Vassia A. Vanezi (GR/CY) at the Ethnological Museum Thrace

Throughout the known history of humanity, threads have been made, aligned and interwoven actually and literally, becoming an indication of cultural values and achievements. Through one dimensional threads of plants or wool, two- or three dimensional objects have been created to protect, warm and carry. Traces of woven cloth have been found far before metal works or pottery. Threads of words, moments and memories have been put together to tell stories, myths, and develop knowledge, while threads of tones and echoes are composing our soundscapes. Through threads of codes software is written and artificial intelligence is programmed. The first marks on Mars were made by the impact of the airbag’s fabric, while ghost interwoven fishnets are threatening the life of the oceans.
The intervention aims to create a dialogue with the collection and environment of the museum. The agency of objects with human given functions and their cultural embeddedness is what inspires the artists to work in and together with the Ethnological Museum of Thrace. Their narratives will be interwoven to an exhibition, which will serve as an interface to the visitors to view weaving through new perspectives and also perceive it aurally. Apart from the works which will be installed in the room for periodic exhibitions of the museum, interventions with small works will be created into the permanent display of the museum and shape an acoustic environment through sound installations. INTERWEAVING NARRATIVES is visioned as a starting point of a long-term platform of exchange, experimentation, creation, and practice on the concept of weaving, through the collision of tradition, technology, and diverse disciplines towards new possibilities for inclusive and viable futures.
